Virtual Artist Talk: Jerry Siegel

WMA is excited to present a virtual artist talk with the renowned photographer Jerry Siegel. In the talk, Siegel will discuss his career and process, examining his work chronologically from the first project to his present-day work. After 35 years of professional experience, Jerry often captures the cultural landscape and people of the American South. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions about Jerry’s work through a Q&A session.

This program is part of WMA’s ongoing Visiting Artist Series, which will focus on themes and inspirations from the museum’s collections-based exhibitions throughout 2021.

Requirements: This opportunity is open to photographers who live in the Wiregrass or Black Belt region of Alabama. Applicants must submit a short artist statement (no more than 150 words).

The registration for this consultation opportunity is now closed. 

Come to the virtual round table with Jerry Siegel for a photography consultation and critique. Wiregrass Museum of Art has created a constructive space for photographers to bring their work to a one-on-one conversation about their photography. Siegel will be available for 20 minutes to advise, answer questions, and share his professional experience. He will help provide direction and guidance to photographers at any level of expertise.

The consultation is free with limited availability to those who meet the geographic requirement and who submit a short artist statement. Registrants should indicate their preference for time slot, and will receive final confirmation for the time slot and Zoom link by email. The first five photographers registered and accepted are required to send 5-10 photographs before the consult, no later than Saturday, September 18, 2021.

About the Photographer

Born in Selma, AL, Jerry Siegel is a photographer living in Atlanta, GA, and working throughout the Southeast. Siegel focuses his work in the traditions of documentary and portrait photography. His work in the Black Belt region of Alabama was recently published by the Georgia Museum of Art. This monograph, Black Belt Color, focuses on the unique, cultural landscape of the Black Belt region. His first monograph, Facing South, Portraits of Southern Artists, was published by the University of Alabama Press in 2012, and features portraits of 100 Southern artists. Siegel’s work is in many public, private and corporate collections including the High Museum of Art, GA Museum of Art, Birmingham Museum of Art, MOCA GA, Ogden Museum of Southern Art, The Do Good Fund, The Telfair Museum, Jepson Center for the Arts in Savannah, GA, The Morris Museum in Augusta, GA, The Wiregrass Museum of Art, and many other Southeastern US Museums.

Siegel was awarded the Grand Prize of the first Artadia Award in Atlanta in 2009. He is represented by Spalding Nix Fine Art.
