WMA is pleased to announce the pilot of our Curriculum Kit Program with eight STEAM lessons

DOTHAN, Alabama – February 24, 2025 -WMA is pleased to announce a new Curriculum Kit Program, including eight STEAM- based lesson plans. The Curriculum Kit Program allows teachers – public, private, and homeschool –  to “check-out” a kit from WMA’s education department. Each kit comes with art integrated lesson plans, instructions, a PowerPoint, and all needed supplies.

The borrower will need to make copies of handouts for their students. These art integrated kits align with Alabama Standards for both Visual Arts and Mathematics, and supplement primary concepts needed to prepare 7th or 8th grade students to take their Math ACAP. However, kits are suitable for students from 6th – 12th grade.

Additional Curriculum Kits are in development, including PreK-3rd Grade Literacy, 6th -12th Grade Measurements, and Adaptive Kits that can be borrowed for students with special needs, allowing for tools and supplies to make the lessons accessible to all students.

When asked how the Kits support classroom instruction, Math teachers at Dothan Prep replied, “creating art pieces based on mathematical principles helped students visualize and internalize the math skills” and “engaging in art projects that incorporate mathematical challenges encourages critical thinking and problem-solving skills. These art/math kits greatly supported multiple learning styles and student needs.”

WMA is committed to its educational mission and believes in the transformative power of art for all ages. We continue to provide opportunities for students, educators, and schools to explore art’s role in learning, across disciplines. In addition to providing Curriculum Kits, WMA has a tour program, which is composed of both gallery and hands-on artmaking time. We provide transportation for qualifying school districts. The museum also hosts an annual exhibition showcase, “Youth Art Month”, and offers professional development for teachers, in person and online.

WMA inspires a lifelong appreciation for the visual arts by providing innovative educational programs that engage diverse audiences through the collection and exhibition of quality works.
