Tony Wright is a ceramic artist based in Mobile, Alabama. His career, spanning over thirty years, has focused primarily on the use of the potter’s wheel to create vessels for both utilitarian and decorative purposes. In addition to his wheel work, which observes a strict symmetry, he also explores subtle and whimsical interpretations of vessel forms, including small and large-scale figurative sculpture.
Wright’s interest in experimentation through his art can be attributed to his work as an educator. As the ceramics professor at the University of South Alabama, he teaches a broad range of materials, processes, and contexts that clay affords. Wright received his MFA at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale and his BFA at Minnesota State University, Moorhead.
This exhibition has been made possible by grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
