Beyond the Horizon: Landscapes from the Permanent Collection

January 17, 2025 - March 30, 2025

This exhibition showcases the beauty and diversity of landscape art through the eyes of a remarkable range of artists. Featuring works by Barry Anderson, John Carroll, Joseph DiGiorgio, and notable Alabama artists Liza Butts and John Kelly Fitzpatrick, the exhibition invites visitors to explore how artists interpret and engage with the natural world. Spanning mediums from vibrant oil pastels and delicate watercolors to evocative photography, the exhibition demonstrates the many ways landscapes can inspire and resonate across time and artistic styles.

All of the works in this exhibition are drawn from WMA’s permanent collection, highlighting the museum’s commitment to preserving and celebrating artistic excellence. With some pieces making their debut to the public, Beyond the Horizon offers a unique opportunity to encounter hidden gems and rediscover beloved favorites. This dynamic selection showcases not only the breadth of the museum’s holdings but also the universal appeal of landscapes as a genre—connecting viewers to the natural world and the artists’ perspectives in meaningful ways.

By highlighting works from the permanent collection, this exhibition underscores the importance of sharing and reinterpreting the museum’s treasures for new audiences. Beyond the Horizon serves as a reminder of the enduring power of art to transport us, provoke reflection, and deepen our appreciation for the world around us.
